How Much Does a Narrowboat Survey Cost? How to Get a Clear Quote

If you are buying a boat, the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) strongly advises having a pre-purchase survey before you commit. Prices vary between surveyors, so the best way to know the cost is to get written quotes.

We have not found an authoritative source for typical survey prices, so we do not quote figures here.

Why a survey, and not just a BSS certificate?

A BSS examination checks whether a boat met the minimum safety requirements on the day it was examined. It is not a condition survey. The BSS says it does not cover:

  • the condition of the hull or deck
  • the integrity of through-hull fittings
  • the stability of the boat
  • the general mechanical condition

A survey is how you find out about those things before you buy.

It works the other way too. A survey does not replace a BSS certificate. Navigation authorities rely on BSS certification, not on a surveyor’s report.

What to ask when you get a quote

Ask each surveyor:

  1. What type of survey do you recommend for this boat, and what does it cover?
  2. Does it need the boat out of the water? If so, who arranges and pays for the lift-out?
  3. How do you price it? Is it by length?
  4. Is travel included?
  5. Are there extra charges for things like engine checks or a valuation?
  6. When will I get the written report?
  7. What is not covered?

Get the answers in writing so you can compare like with like.

Finding a surveyor

Look for a surveyor who regularly surveys inland waterway boats. Two bodies you can search:

Some surveyors are also authorised BSS examiners. They may be willing to carry out a BSS examination while surveying the boat, if you agree it with them. You can find BSS examiners on the official BSS Find An Examiner page.

After the survey

Read the report and use it. It can help you decide whether to buy, whether to renegotiate, or what work to plan.

Once the boat is yours, you will need a valid BSS certificate and the right insurance before you can licence it.
